When Vegeta says things like this, it feeds my headcanon that he’s a total workaholic who has done nothing but work and train while under Frieza since he was a little kid to the point where the only breaks he takes is passing out (aka sleeping) and eating. And he spends inadequate time eating for a Saiyan which is why he’s so short and skinny. And and and Nappa forced Vegeta to stop and eat something on that one planet, which is why Nappa was sitting there STARING DAGGERS into the back of Vegeta’s head. So Vegeta was all, “FINE, NAPPA, YOU WANT ME TO EAT SOMETHING!?!?” so he just rips off that guy’s arm and starts chowing down and Nappa is all, “DAYUM….”. So, yeah, no time for ladies for Vegeta. I can see Nappa working an excessive amount, but still leaving some downtime and rest. And Raditz, while he also trains with them, is the laziest of the three (which is why he was the weakest and his tail was still a weakness BUT HE GETS ALL THE LADIES so he’s ok with it).

I have often in seen in many feminist texts the idea that Triton (and let’s face it, all masculine Disney dads) are symbols of the patriarchy that the daughter has to escape. However, the one I have always had the most push-back with is King Triton from The Little Mermaid. I feel like the film has always set up Triton as a bigot and a xenophobe, without bringing up the fact that…well he had valid reasons to be fearful of humans and questionable of his daughter going up to land.

We start of seeing these fishermen catching fish and talking about King Triton and what not, but we see a fish escape capture. Ariel’s best friend is a fish, sea-creatures, which humans eat, are personified and give human emotions and sentiments. Sebastian barely escapes being eaten in the Les Possion song and has to run to Ariel’s plate. So, when Triton talks about not wanting Ariel to end up on some fisherman’s hook, that’s not just some dad trying to protect his poor daughter’s virginity…she’s a mermaid, if humans found her, there is no telling what could happen to her. She could be eaten, she could be experimented on, etc. The fear is real, it’s not just some dad being crazed. If we are to take the 3rd film as cannon (which, I doubt it really is), Triton’s wife and Ariel’s mother was killed by human pirates. His fear of humans just doesn’t seem like an irrational one to me.

The other people bring up is Triton sending Sebastian to spy on her and him destroying her cave. Now, both of these actions are wrong, especially the latter. However, I understand his motives in both. Ariel being late for the musical was a big deal, because she broke her responsibilities, but she also got herself and Flounder into grave danger. They were attacked by a shark. That at least must constitute grounding? However, since doors/windows don’t seem to really exist he sends Sebastian. Also, to just be fair, we saw Ariel in the first ten minutes get attacked and almost eaten, doesn’t it make sense to Triton to be concerned? She’s putting herself in active danger constantly and then going up to land where she is in potentially more danger.

The cave scene is without a doubt horrifying and Triton is wrong completely for doing it. I have some feelings about it, but they are too longwinded so to sum it up, I do see this as an important scene because it triggers Ariel’s choice to go to Ursula.

It seems that the narrative is trying to say that Ariel’s thoughts on humans are the right one, but at the same time as an adult viewer, her ideas are extremely idolized and without any real basis. Triton is right to have fear and Ariel’s lack there off is pushed aside because of the metaphor the movie wants to adds.

Let’s touch on those real quick. Triton is set up to be, for lack of a better word, a bigot. He is racist and xenophobic against humans and Ariel is enlightening force. Lemme just say, as a woman of color, there is nothing I have grown to hate more than supernatural prejudice metaphors. Especially ones are not in any way relatable to actual prejudice and ones told with a cast of white people.

Merpeople and humans are not the same race. Like—-at all. The Xenophobia is even a stretch because neither are treated like foreign bodies. If anything the way Triton treats humans is the way prey would act around a predator. He’s afraid of them and what they can do to his people and his family. If Triton’s actions are supposed to be a parallel, then it’s a poor one because there is no equivalency to it. Especially when on top of it you have white mermaids and white humans in this conflict with zero people of color.

So, I guess I just do not think that Triton is really a patriarchical figure in the feminist sense. He doesn’t try to keep Ariel in “her place” or is overly protective about her virginity (in fact he reacts very positively when he thinks Ariel is in love) and his actions, while over the top, are understandable just never treated like a real issue.

I wrote this post because I was curious about what other disney feminists had to say, this is only my opinion and I do want to here opposing ones. Sorry if this was a ramble…brooklyn is burning.
